Effective July 19, 2024, Vital Records will issue an abstract death certificate. An abstract death certificate will provide all the same information found on a death certificate, but the abstract will not have any cause of death information. This will only be issued if a death certificate cannot be issued due to a pending investigation. Click here for a FAQ on abstract death certificates.

Effective June 14, 2023, the DHHS regulations (Title 174 Vital Records, Chapter 3) regarding viewing and release of vital records have been updated. Items in this update included:

  • Funeral homes will now only be able to request death certificates for one year after the filing date of the death certificate. After one year the families will need to request certificates directly from Vital Records.

  • Funeral homes can only request death certificates for death records that they did the service for or was the trade call.

  • No refunds will be made if you order a death certificate for a decedent’s family your funeral home did not provide service to.

  • Have the family contact Vital Records directly with requests or questions – (402) 471-2871
